Nithya Raman’s Plans Spark Controversy in Silver Lake
Nithya Raman, known for her socialist views, seems to be facing some criticism for her latest project.
According to reports, the city council member isn’t satisfied with her $1.9 million home in Silver Lake and is moving forward with plans to demolish and rebuild. This new project would increase her living space by an impressive 88%.
City records indicate that Raman, who lives there with her husband, a TV producer, and their twin children, wants to replace their historic 1948 house with a large three-story mansion that includes a spa and a two-car garage.
She originally purchased the three-bedroom home for $1.25 million back in 2015—a record at the time for that Echo Park-Silver Lake area.
The current home spans 1,879 square feet, featuring hardwood floors, wood-beamed ceilings, a gourmet kitchen, walk-in closets, and a spacious deck with wide-ranging views.
However, recent filings with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety reveal that Raman aims to extend the home’s footprint to over 3,528 square feet, which has left some neighbors feeling upset.
“This is really disappointing to hear,” one local expressed. “I had no idea. It’s a shame she would want to do something like that.” Another comment referenced a new, modern home nearby, which they labeled as an “eyesore” that negatively impacted the neighborhood.
Raman’s current residence is considered a “contributor” to the Silver Lake Residential Historic District, meaning it plays a role in the area’s historic charm. Yet, this designation does not prevent the home from being torn down.
One neighbor lamented, “This is really going to have a great impact on this community,” about the proposed demolition.
City records show that Raman’s aspirations for her property have evolved alongside her rising profile in Los Angeles. Initially, she planned to remodel and enhance the existing home by adding a pool or spa and converting the garage into separate living space; however, now it seems she has shifted towards complete demolition.
The project entails hillside grading, temporary shoring, and new retaining walls, complicating the rebuilding process.
An employee from the LADBS confirmed that Raman’s project is still pending approval.
Interestingly, this major redevelopment coincides with Raman’s mayoral campaign, where she emphasizes the urgent need to address Los Angeles’ soaring housing costs.
A member of the Democratic Socialists of America since before her first city council campaign in 2020, Raman has recently received their endorsement for her mayoral bid. The DSA advocates for housing as a fundamental human right, pushing for more public or community control over housing rather than private ownership.
Raman has frequently referred to the affordable housing crisis as a “moral crisis” and promises to triple the city’s annual housing construction. She has also participated in fundraisers with local housing advocates, during which she shared her vision for a more livable and affordable Los Angeles.
Barry Cassily, a Venice developer, commented on the perceived contradictions in Raman’s actions, stating, “These socialists are hilarious.” He criticized her plans to replace a historic property with a large new home, labeling it a showcase of hypocrisy similar to another DSA candidate who was recently highlighted for living in a luxury rental while advocating for housing reform.
Susan Collins, a former neighborhood council member, remarked that Raman represents the classic “champagne socialist.” According to Raman’s financial disclosures, she has notable investments and a significant household income, which also adds to the skepticism surrounding her plans.
Raman’s financial reports show substantial holdings, including between $100,001 and $1 million in Alphabet Inc. stock, along with a similar amount in Comcast stock. Additionally, her previous role as executive director at Time’s Up Now contributed over $100,000 to her income, further indicating her financial status.
