NJ Transit passengers face disruptions as extreme heat leads to delays and cancellations

Just a day after fares increased by 3%, commuters using New Jersey transit experienced a challenging Thursday marked by extreme heat, leading to significant delays and cancellations.

According to the state Department of Transportation, equipment failures were reported amidst a severe “heat dome” that enveloped the tri-state area, with temperatures hitting the 100-degree mark, impacting both morning and evening travel.

The high temperatures can lead to numerous equipment issues such as sagging wires, warped tracks, melting asphalt, and poor air conditioning performance.

Lines including Montclair/Boonton, Morris and Essex, Northeast Corridor, Maine/Bergen County, Raritan Valley, and Pascack Valley all faced delays or cancellations lasting up to an hour as of Thursday night, attributed to the oppressive heat. The North Jersey coastline, too, reported delays of up to 90 minutes.

Additionally, trains heading to Midtown on the Montclair/Boonton and Morris & Essex lines were rerouted to the Hoboken terminal due to ongoing equipment problems.

Rail services are anticipated to remain disrupted with delays and cancellations continuing through Friday, and authorities are advising travelers to refrain from “non-essential travel.”

This situation follows closely after a 3% fare hike for commuters using trains, buses, and light rail, which took effect on Wednesday.

NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are recognized by both NJ TRANSIT and private carriers including Bus, Newark Penn, Hoboken, New York 33rd Street PATH, and New York Waterway Ferry.

Furthermore, Amtrak Northeast has announced that trains will be operating at reduced speeds through Saturday, July 4, with possible delays between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Commuters have been urged to check train statuses before starting their journeys.

The intense heat is projected to continue into Friday, bringing with it the potential for thunderstorms later in the evening.
