The final squad for Paris has been announced, but for the first time since 2004, the Brownlee brothers will not be on Team GB’s triathlon squad.
Jonny Brownlee, part of the gold medal-winning mixed relay team in Tokyo three years ago, is not on the list, despite finishing third at the Europa Cup meet in Kielce, Poland, this month. His brother Alistair, now 36, won gold in London in 2012 and in Rio four years later, and finished 14th at the recent Triathlon World Tour meet in San Francisco.
The judges decided to give the men’s spot to Samuel Dickinson, who won the Kielce competition and also placed fourth at the world championships in London in April.
Dickinson will join Alex Yi, a two-time medalist at the Tokyo Olympics. The 26-year-old won a silver medal in the men’s event in 2021 and was part of the winning mixed relay team. Yi was already named to the team late last year.
Joining last year’s selection, Beth Potter, the women’s line-up also includes Georgia Taylor-Brown and Kate Waugh, who won the mixed relay team in Tokyo and took individual silver despite suffering a puncture on the bike.
Jess Learmonth was the fourth member of the 2021 relay team but has not been successful in returning to the Olympics despite battling to return to competition since giving birth last September and competing last month for the first time in more than two years.
Team GB Chief of Mission Mark England said: “We are delighted to welcome Georgia, Kate and Sam as part of Team GB’s Paris 2024 Olympic Athletes. The triathlon in Paris is one of the major attractions of the Games and it’s great to once again have such a competitive field competing on both the water and the roads.”
Mike Cavendish, British Triathlon Performance Director and British Team Triathlon lead, said: “Announceing the full Olympic field is really exciting for British Triathlon and for the athletes, particularly given that the Games will be held domestically after the experience of a Covid-19 Olympics in Tokyo.”

“Throughout the process, the realistic possibility of winning a medal has come to the fore and with this in mind, we are delighted to welcome Georgia, Kate and Sam to join the already announced Beth Potter and Alex Yee.
“This was an incredibly tough selection process and I know it has brought joy for some athletes and disappointment for others. The Olympic Games are the pinnacle of our sport and I know how much it means to the five athletes competing in Paris this summer.”
