Following President Joe Biden’s abysmal debate performance, Democratic lawmakers met Tuesday morning to decide who they should support for president, but the Democratic Party remains in disarray.
Biden, 81, who is still seen as the de facto nominee, steadied his position as the candidate on Monday by actively inviting primary candidates to next week’s convention while also winning the endorsement of “squad” members.
Not all Democrats are in favor of or happy with Biden staying in the lead. Post-debate polls show Biden losing in key battleground states. A Suffolk University poll found that 41% of Democrats want Biden to drop out of the race, while only 51% want him to stay in the lead.

This debate was just a public expression of concerns that many of them have experienced or expressed personally. And that’s from people who felt they had actually been able to spend time with the President over the past year. Others complained about very limited/controlled interactions. But they also didn’t want to be publicly ostracized or feel like Biden was already set in stone to be the nominee.

There’s a lot of talk about how tough the situation is for Democrats. Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) said putting Harris at the top of the list is setting her up to fail. Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) said he saw recent polls that showed Biden losing in his district, which Biden won with 62% of the vote last time.

Democratic leaders have not backed any opposition to Biden, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York still appearing to support Biden.
Political experts say Democrats have no choice but to turn to Biden for three reasons: the difficulty of replacing him with 50 states on the ballot, the difficulty of putting money behind a new candidate and the difficulty of finding a potential sacrificial lamb to run in Biden’s place.
