Noah Wyle reveals he was financially struggling after 'ER' before getting the part in 'The Pitt'

Noah Wyle Reflects on Career and Financial Struggles Following ER

Noah Wyle, who gained fame through his role in “ER,” has acknowledged that he nearly exhausted all his earnings from the show before recharging his career.

Wyle, known for portraying Dr. John Carter alongside George Clooney, was a mainstay on “ER” for over a decade, earning several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Nearly 20 years later, he revealed that he faced financial difficulties before securing a lead role in HBO’s “The Pit.”

“Not to make it a sob story, but I spent nearly all the money I made on ‘ER,'” Wyle shared. “A few years back, I quit working just for pay and began focusing on experience and the necessity of work.”

He mentioned, “I was thinking about the future of my career. Let’s simplify things and make it sustainable,” adding a level of introspection that’s quite relatable.

When COVID-19 struck, Wyle encountered a career pause for the first time in years. He noted that during the pandemic, healthcare workers began reaching out for shows like “ER.” He admitted to feeling “deeply depressed” during the 2023 Hollywood strike.

Warner Bros. recently announced that “The Pit” would be available for streaming in 2024. This project came about years after Wyle collaborated with “ER” creators R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells to create a new narrative. Initially, they envisioned a reboot of “ER” focusing on Dr. John Carter’s life in the 2020s, but those discussions didn’t pan out.

“I wanted to highlight first responders and shine a light on a community that truly needed it,” Wyle expressed. “And Mr. Wells encouraged me, saying, ‘You could still do that.'”

About the New Show

Similar to “ER,” “The Pit” is set in Pittsburgh, prioritizing medical realism and addressing contemporary health issues, while minimizing insight into the characters’ personal lives.

Despite Wyle’s success on “ER,” the demanding hours and commitments led him to pass on major films like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Good Night and Good Luck.”

Reflecting on his journey, Wyle remarked, “I was fortunate to land a significant role early on and was part of a long-running show. I dedicated myself to it, and whatever followed came later.”
