None of Trump's Advisors Will Challenge Him

Italian Defense Minister’s Critique of Trump

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crossetto expressed his thoughts during an interview with Corriere della Sera on Tuesday. He asserted that President Donald Trump requires “courageous” advisers, claiming that individuals close to him hesitate to challenge his decisions.

Interestingly, Crossetto didn’t provide any evidence to back up his assertions about the president.

In the interview, he touched on several issues, including the ongoing conflict with Iran, Trump’s ultimatum to the Iranian regime, and the ensuing crisis, which he described as “unprecedented in recent history.” When asked if there was a way to rein in Trump given Iran’s dismissal of U.S. proposals, he replied that Trump, as a leader of a sovereign nation, is not easily swayed by outside influence.

When questioned about whether impeachment was on the table for Trump, he reportedly said, “No, I don’t even think his opponents are considering it.”

Crossetto noted, “I simply believe he needs more courageous advisers. Part of the problem with this presidency is that no one dares to contradict the president.” He added that the situation with the Iranian regime, which he criticized as oppressive and anti-Western, is a shared concern. He lamented that the war was initiated unilaterally, without international approval.

According to him, Europe is “doing everything it can” in response to Trump, though he sees the situation as manageable. He emphasized that Italy has taken a strong stance by not supporting the war and attempting to mitigate its impact.

He also criticized delayed responses from Italy regarding demands from internal factions, suggesting the country acted “too late.” Crossetto defended Italy’s position, saying, “We are not an ally of Trump or Biden but of the United States.” He underlined that the alliance wouldn’t break, mentioning the ongoing threats from Iran and the importance of NATO’s defense in safeguarding nations.

Addressing concerns about the U.S. potentially leaving NATO, he expressed skepticism that Trump would take such a step, believing it would require Congressional approval that he doubts would be granted. However, he acknowledged that troop withdrawals from Europe could leave Italy vulnerable.

Crossetto concluded by highlighting the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that Trump’s swift agenda might risk U.S. global leadership, especially with mid-term elections on the horizon.
