North Carolina alligator filmed doing a ‘death roll’ during wrangling

An alligator in North Carolina was filmed performing a “death roll” last week as law enforcement relentlessly cracked down on it.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office posted about the incident on Facebook on May 14th. The reptile was found near the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington after a resident alerted law enforcement.

“Our legislators never know what they will be called upon to respond to!” the Facebook post began.

“Last night, Deputies Sutton and Nichter responded to the base of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge after receiving multiple calls regarding this large man hanging out in the roadway,” the post added. “Deputies safely removed alligators from Highway 17S entering Brunswick County twice.”

The video shows a group of officers pulling the crocodile with a rope attached to its nose. The crocodile drags along the sidewalk, motionless.

“It’s all fun and games…” one officer can be heard saying.

“He’s going to roll,” another said, before the alligator rolled onto his back and onto his stomach. Crocodiles typically perform death rolls as a combat tactic when capturing prey.

“He’s also growling now,” the officer observed. The rest of the video shows the alligator resisting officers.
