North Carolina expectant father rescued by wife's quick actions after experiencing a sudden heart attack

Unexpected Cardiac Arrest Saved by Quick Actions

A man in North Carolina, unaware of his rare heart condition, experienced a cardiac arrest while relaxing in bed, but his pregnant wife intervened just in time.

Brandon Whitfield, who is 39, was planning for big changes when his wife Angela became pregnant last spring. However, only nine weeks into her pregnancy, he unexpectedly had a heart attack.

“I was in bed eating carrot cake and watching the hockey playoffs, and in the middle of a conversation, I just collapsed,” Brandon recounted.

At first, Angela didn’t react immediately; she thought he might just be teasing or zoning out. But when she recognized the situation was serious, she jumped into action.

Fortunately, Angela has over a decade of experience as a physician assistant. She quickly called 911 and began CPR on her husband, who was on the floor.

Still, as she started the life-saving measures, she felt a surge of emotion.

“I never imagined I’d have to give CPR to my spouse,” she expressed.

She even thought about the possibility of losing him, admitting, “I thought I might become a widow.”

Brandon was taken to Novant Health Medical Center, where he learned he had a rare heart condition. This news shocked him.

“Just because you’re young and fit doesn’t mean you can’t have heart disease,” he warned.

Brandon praised Angela for her quick thinking, saying, “It was nothing short of a miracle. Everything aligned for her to be there. It wasn’t my time yet.”

In light of his diagnosis, he has begun following a Mediterranean diet and is now more conscious about his food choices—meaning he’s kissing carrot cake goodbye.

Following this near-death experience, Brandon, who is soon to be a father, urged others not to take life for granted. “If there’s anything you can do today, do it today. If you can tell your family you love them, don’t wait,” he advised.
