North Dakota Representative's Pro-Abortion Legislation Fails Miserably

North Dakota Lawmaker Defeated After Controversial Abortion Bill

In a surprising turn, Republican state Representative Eric Murphy lost his primary election in North Dakota after proposing a bill that was labeled by a pro-life leader as “the most pro-abortion bill” in the state’s history.

Murphy garnered only 24.3% of the vote, finishing third, as reported by the Grand Rapids Herald. He expressed concerns that his bill may have hurt Republican support ahead of the election, mentioning this to ProPublica.

Brigitte Turbid, Executive Director of North Dakota Lifetime Rights, celebrated the outcome, stating, “Eric Murphy introduced the most pro-abortion bill in state history, so we are very pleased with this outcome.” Jill Chandler, a challenger and former executive director of a local pregnancy center, won the primary, which Turbid saw as a significant victory for the pro-life movement.

Reflecting on his service, Murphy posted on social media, “I served with integrity and political courage. It’s hard to say goodbye, but this is a pause. It’s not over yet.”

In North Dakota, abortion is illegal from conception, with limited exceptions. Murphy’s proposed bill, HB1488, introduced last January, aimed to permit abortions for any reason during the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. However, it was decisively defeated in the House.

During a hearing, Murphy recounted tragic cases, including a woman in Texas who died after a miscarriage, emphasizing the dangers of stringent laws: “Doctors felt they had to follow the law… and two women died because these insane laws were followed.”

Interestingly, North Dakota’s existing anti-abortion law does not consider the removal of a deceased fetus as an abortion. Following the primary, Chandler and her team are preparing for the upcoming election against two Democratic candidates for the 43rd District seat in November.
