Northeast areas of busy Interstate 95 are expected to see an increased chance of snow before the Monday morning commute.
The FOX Prediction Center is monitoring the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of snow falling from Washington to Boston late Sunday, and weakening starting Monday.
The snow will be accompanied by the coldest temperatures of the season.
The exact amount of snow will depend on how the two storm systems that will move through the Northeast this weekend interact.
The first system will be an area of low pressure extending from eastern Canada on Saturday.
Temperatures in the 40s mean a strong chance of rain for most of the Ohio Valley and Northeast on Saturday as part of this first system.
As cold air moves in, the rain will turn to snow from near Ohio and Indiana to the interior Northeast.
The FOX Prediction Center said several inches of wet snow could fall before the system moves offshore Saturday night.
On Sunday, it looks increasingly likely that a secondary area of low pressure will develop somewhere off the coast of the Carolinas and move to the East Coast, bringing snow.
“The placement of this and its strength is going to make a big difference in all the snow,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin. “When you have a low pressure system just off the coast, it usually creates a very thin band on its backside that blows heavy snow into it.
