A man from Northern California has been reunited with his cherished muscle car, stolen over three decades ago, according to police reports this week.
Auburn police recently found a black 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle while performing a vehicle identification number check. Although they didn’t specify what prompted the VIN search, they indicated they found something that warranted further examination, as mentioned on their Facebook page.
The classic car had been reported stolen back in 1993 from San Mateo County, which is quite a distance—over 258 miles away.
The legal owner, whose identity remains undisclosed, was thrilled to be reunited with the vehicle and even posed for a joyful photo in front of it, which was shared online.
The Facebook post declared, “After more than 30 years, this classic is finally back where it belongs.” The California Highway Patrol noted that, with help from the San Mateo Police Department, they managed to trace the car’s history, accomplishing what might have seemed impossible: bringing the Chevelle back to its original owner after all these years.
Many users on Facebook expressed their happiness over the story. One remarked on the car’s condition, saying, “Still in beautiful condition and looks like that. What a great story.”
Another user commented, “It also appears to have been beautifully kept. I can’t imagine the shock and awe the owners must have felt.”
However, questions linger regarding who stole the car and the reasons behind it.
As of now, the California Highway Patrol has not responded to requests for additional comments.
