Northern Light Health strikes agreement with Maine insurer to reduce expenses

Northern Light Health Signs New Agreement with Maine Insurer

Northern Light Health has finalized an agreement with a Maine-based insurance provider, resulting in lower expenses for policyholders.

Community Health Options, a nonprofit insurance organization led by its members, announced on Wednesday that the deal will enhance access to care for nine Northern Light hospitals and over 127 members in Maine, facilitating easier access.

“We are excited to share our commitment to offering a variety of services to our members,” stated Joanne Lauterbach, Chief Financial Officer of Community Health Options. “This new agreement will enable us to enhance access to quality care at a lower total cost and ultimately support our members’ health and well-being.”

According to the terms of this agreement, Community Health Options members will see immediate improvements in interest rates and prior approval requirements. Essentially, members who are admitted to Northern Light facilities will have their entire hospitalization approved.

Furthermore, starting January 1, 2026, members will benefit from enhanced out-of-pocket and coinsurance rates at all Kitako Medical Facilities.

“This agreement is a significant win for our statewide community health options members, offering a more efficient and cost-effective means of receiving necessary care. Collaborating with an organization that acknowledges the needs of patients and community members in Maine is always rewarding,” Lauterbach added.

This development follows Northern Light Health’s recent breakdown in negotiations with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. As a result, the health system’s hospitals, primary care services, and other offerings are set to move outside the insurer’s network starting October 1st.

Northern Light stated that it submitted a counteroffer to Anthem on July 30th after cutting off negotiations, but the insurer did not provide a response. The health system remains hopeful for an eventual agreement.

In 2022, a public contract dispute between MaineHealth and Anthem led to accusations, with MaineHealth alleging unpaid millions and Anthem claiming exorbitant transient fees.

Prior to the contract’s expiration, both parties reached a resolution, averting MaineHealth’s withdrawal from Anthem’s network.

This week, Anthem also announced a partnership with ConvenientMD to incorporate the Bango Primary Care Office in Broadways into its network.
