Freighter Grounds Near Home in Norway
When Johann Helberg mentioned his view of the waterfront, he didn’t quite expect it to literally come to him—especially not on a 443-foot freighter. On Thursday, he woke up to find the massive bow of the NCL Salten just a stone’s throw away from his home in Baesett, near Trondheim.
The ship ran aground early in the morning, and surprisingly, Helberg’s house was only about 16 feet away from the containers. He was completely unaware until neighbors rang his doorbell to inform him of the unusual sight.
“Honestly, I was shocked to look out the window and see such a big boat,” Helberg recalled. “I had to crane my neck just to see the top. It felt surreal.”
Authorities later found out that a ship inspector—reportedly a Ukrainian in his 30s—had fallen asleep on the job, which resulted in the ship veering off course. Although there’s no report of injuries or spills, the incident caused some minor damage to Helberg’s heating system.
The NCL Salten isn’t new to mishaps. This was actually its second grounding; it had previously run aground in 2023 but managed to free itself back then without help. Attempts to refloat the ship during high tide on Thursday didn’t work out either.
Now, Norwegian coastal authorities are looking into the situation through geotechnical assessments before making another attempt to move the vessel. The shipping company, NCL, has stated they’re cooperating with the investigation.
As for Helberg, he seems to be taking it all in stride. “It’s a rather bulky new neighbor, but they’ll have it moved soon,” he joked.
