‘Not That Liberal’: Brother Affirms Pope Leo XIV Will Not Shift The Church Too Far Left

Pope Leo XIV’s Brother Discusses Political Views

Louis Prevast, the brother of Pope Leo XIV, expressed skepticism about the new Pope steering the Catholic Church to the left politically.

He noted that the Pope has shared several posts indicating a left-leaning stance on issues like immigration policy during President Trump’s tenure, especially around the 2020 elections, as well as perspectives on COVID-19 vaccines and racial justice.

“I don’t think he’ll push the Church to the left,” Prevost remarked. “I see him as more centrist. If he meets with Trump, I doubt their discussions will lead to any significant conflicts. They might even find common ground.”

Prevost acknowledged that while his brother may challenge Trump on certain immigration matters, he recognizes that there are laws in the U.S. and other nations that need to be respected. “The Church has its doctrines, so I don’t expect him to deviate significantly from what Pope Francis has established,” he added. “There’s a belief that people fundamentally have the right to exist wherever they find themselves, but laws must also be followed.”

He continued, “He might critique the methods of immigration enforcement but will likely insist that legal processes need to be adhered to.”

When asked about his brother’s stance on the ordination of female priests and other contentious issues within the Church, Prevost said, “The priests are celibate and women aren’t allowed to become priests. He’s not as liberal on those issues as some might think.”

After the new Pope’s election, he shared various posts supporting racial equality from 2020 and openly criticized Trump’s immigration policies.

In a post, he countered an argument made by Vice President JD Vance, stating that Jesus does not prioritize love for family and friends over compassion for others in the community.

Additionally, the Pope referenced a call from the Catholic Church to reject racism and pursue justice following the death of George Floyd.

It has been reported that Leo XIV has participated in Republican primaries in 2012, 2014, and 2016, though he last voted in the Democratic primary in 2010.
