Nouriel Roubini’s Take on the Future of Currency

Well-known economist Nouriel Roubini has made bold statements regarding the future of currency, asserting that it won’t be influenced by cryptocurrencies. He emphasized the ongoing collapse of certain currencies, particularly criticizing Bitcoin and other significant digital tokens.

In an op-ed for Project Syndicate titled “The Coming Crypto Apocalypse,” Roubini noted that optimism had surged since Donald Trump took office, largely due to his support for virtual currencies. Some had even suggested that Bitcoin could become the “digital gold” and reach values as high as $200,000 by the end of 2025.

Roubini, however, expressed skepticism about this trend. He pointed out that cryptocurrencies were expected to thrive amid macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties—like increasing debts and a decline in fiat currencies. Yet, he remarked that over the past year, gold has appreciated by over 60%, while Bitcoin has actually decreased by 7%.

He described the recent downturn in cryptocurrencies as further evidence of their volatility, referring to them as “pseudo-assets.” Roubini cautioned that it’s crucial for lawmakers to recognize these risks before they escalate.

Additionally, Roubini believes that decentralized finance will never achieve widespread adoption and that anonymity in financial transactions won’t be allowed by any government, including during the Trump presidency.

Roubini also raised concerns about stablecoins, which are now under new regulatory frameworks. He warned that these could undermine traditional banking and potentially lead to financial instability.

His opinions carry weight, considering he famously predicted the 2008 financial crisis, earning him the nickname “Doctor Doom.” He has consistently expressed doubt about cryptocurrencies and once labeled Bitcoin as the “mother of all frauds” during testimony to U.S. senators in 2018.
