NPR editor takes stand after calling out left-wing bias as GOP prepares to defund the network

Uli Berliner, the journalist who accused NPR of left-wing bias, has resigned from NPR.

Last week in Berlin Published an essay in the Free Press He expressed concern that his employer, the taxpayer-funded corporate media, has “lost America’s credibility” by embracing a “progressive worldview.”

NPR leadership rejected Berliner’s views, even though he had worked there for 25 years and witnessed liberal trends.

And last Friday, the company suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Management accused Mr. Berliner of violating a company policy that required prior approval from employees before publishing in outside publications.

Berliner said in a statement Wednesday that he was not resigning because of the punishment. Rather, he decided to resign because he felt CEO Katherine Maher was criticizing him. In a memo to NPR staff last week,.

Berliner announced:

I am retiring from NPR, a great American institution, where I have worked for 25 years. I do not support the argument to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and want NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I can’t work in a newsroom where the new CEO despises the divisiveness that underpins the very NPR issues I cited in my Free Press essay.

Berliner told the New York Times He has no immediate plans other than spending time with his family and resting.

On the same day that Mr. Berliner tendered his resignation, dozens of NPR employees sent a letter to company leadership publicly reprimanding and correcting the “factual inaccuracies and omissions” in Mr. Berliner’s essay. he demanded.

This request appears to confirm many of Berliner’s core criticisms of NPR. As the old saying goes, if the shoes fit, wear them.

Meanwhile, Republicans are calling for taxpayer funding to be withdrawn from NPR. In fact, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) is preparing to introduce a bill that would do just that.

“Mainstream media is bent on bending to the left and destroying strong conservatives, and NPR is leading the charge,” Blackburn said. Said. “It makes no sense for Americans to be forced to fund a propaganda left-wing news organization that refuses to represent the voices of half the country. NPR should not receive our tax dollars.”
