Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang Criticizes China’s AI Ban as a ‘Failure’ and Urges Trump to Lift Export Restrictions

Nvidia CEO Calls for Easing AI Export Restrictions to China

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang recently urged the Trump administration to reduce hurdles for exporting AI technology to China. He warned that if American companies don’t supply chips to competitors, particularly firms like Huawei, it could lead to significant revenue losses—potentially billions of dollars.

During a speech at the Computex event in Taipei, Huang voiced his worries regarding the effects of strict US export regulations on AI tech in China. He noted that China could represent a $50 billion market for AI tech providers by 2026. If American firms like Nvidia abstain from this market, customers will likely turn to alternatives. Huang criticized the government’s approach, describing it as a failure in stopping high-tech AI hardware from reaching adversaries.

Huang’s perspective aligns with some officials in Washington who advocate for widespread adoption of the American “technical stack,” which includes a variety of US-developed hardware and services. The Trump administration is in the process of lifting restrictions on Nvidia chip exports to many regions, yet new regulatory frameworks are still being established.

He also disputed the idea that the US holds exclusive rights to AI infrastructure. Huang highlighted that China occupies a large share of the global AI developer landscape, claiming that 50% of the world’s developers work there. This underlines Nvidia’s prior points during discussions about AI startups that are dependent on exporting to China.

Nvidia itself is impacted by the management of its advanced chip sales in China, the top semiconductor market globally. The firm invested $5.5 billion into H20 AI chips intended for the Chinese market, designed to meet initial export regulations on high-performance components. However, the recent expansion of restrictions now includes these chips as well.

While in Taipei, Huang discussed the ambitious $500 billion Stargate Project, which involves partnerships, including OpenAI that rely heavily on Nvidia’s technology. The project is encountering funding challenges, yet Huang expressed a hopeful outlook for its future.
