New York City Councilman Robert Holden (D) is encouraging Democratic lawmakers to support ending the city's existing sanctuary policy, which “protects” illegal aliens who commit crimes from federal immigration officials. There is.
on wednesday, Holden sent a letter Mayor Eric Adams (D), Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), and other city and state legislative leaders are pushing for sanctuary policies that would prohibit local law enforcement officers from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. asked them to reconsider their support.
“In fact, the president could say to governors and mayors, “Cooperate with us or we'll charge you with a felony.''
“I write this letter with grave concerns about the continued impact of New York State’s sanctuary policies and the city’s policies. [federal law] “Federal law specifically prohibits harboring, sheltering, or concealing illegal aliens, especially aliens engaged in criminal activity,” Holden said.
On Monday, Holden appeared on the following show. “Fox & Friends” There, he praised President-elect Donald Trump's incoming border czar, Tom Homan, for recently warning political leaders who try to interfere with ICE's deportation efforts.
“I love our new border czar, Tom Homan, who appeared on Fox last week and said, 'We're going to hold mayors and governors accountable,'” Holden told Fox News.
He explained that some Democratic leaders are violating the law by using sanctuary policies to block federal immigration officials from entering the country.
“That's a felony,” Holden said. “We are like a shield [illegal immigrants]. The governors, Democratic governors, and mayors of these sanctuary cities are protecting criminals and terrorists. ”
He expressed national security concerns about local law enforcement being prohibited from communicating with federal authorities. Holden said it's “incredible” that his fellow Democrats want to keep criminals and terrorists in the country.
Kenneth Gennaro, director of ICE's New York City field office, said Friday that “it will take a lifetime” to deport the criminal illegal aliens currently residing in the city.
Adams has also expressed interest in revoking the city's sanctuary status, arguing that his hands are tied unless council members vote to repeal some of the policies.
When asked what Adams could do to remove criminal illegal aliens from the streets of New York City, Holden told Fox News that he should petition Hochul to negotiate policy changes with the City Council. I answered that I could ask.
“I have high hopes for President Trump,” Holden continued. “I think President Trump can say, 'If you're going to violate the law, it's a felony to protect and harbor illegal aliens who have committed crimes.'”
“In fact, the president could say to governors and mayors, 'If you don't cooperate with us, we're going to charge you with a felony,'” he added.
He noted that Homan had previously warned that local leaders could face federal charges for harboring illegal immigrants.
“The people who say stop what we're doing, they're not going to stop,” Homan told Fox News last week.
“Let me give you a word of advice: If you interfere with us, there will be consequences,” he continued. “Intentionally harboring and concealing illegal aliens is a serious crime.”
