Progressive democratic socialists are celebrating Zohran Mamdani’s rise as a strong candidate for New York City mayor.
The local chapter of the socialist group mounted a significant field operation during the Democratic primary, enlisting 50,000 volunteers to propel Mamdani from an underdog to a leading candidate. A detailed report highlights these efforts.
The volunteers engaged in a massive grassroots campaign, making over 1.6 million door knocks and 2.3 million phone calls, driven by their enthusiasm and the organization’s activism.
This unpaid force contrasted sharply with Andrew’s more conventional top-down campaign approach, which included some paid canvassing efforts.
“We don’t know the skills needed to run our campaign,” Grace Musser, co-chair of the NYC-DSA, explained publicly.
Mamdani’s significant Democratic victory can be attributed largely to the push from the democratic socialists in New York City, as noted in a recent report.
The DSA’s campaign focused on three groups: left-wing activists, tenants in rent-stabilized apartments, and Muslims—those motivated by Mamdani’s working-class policies.
While Mamdani’s viral social media presence contributed to his rise, reports indicate that the NYC-DSA’s grassroots efforts played a crucial role in his success.
The historic victory in Queens last June was a mix of support from both the progressive Brooklyn district voters and those New Yorkers who typically do not align with democratic socialism.
Yet, as Mamdani approaches the four-way general election in November, he seems hesitant to fully embrace some of the DSA’s more radical policies.
His campaign has been supportive of ending school safety officers in schools, but it’s unclear whether they would endorse policies regarding the holding of immigrants for local office votes.
The Mamdani campaign had not responded to requests for comment as of Friday.
