New York City on Monday expanded a curfew at more than a dozen immigrant shelters following a recent spate of violence involving police and immigrants in Times Square.
The 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, which was originally in effect at four shelters, is now also in place at 20 other shelters, said Kayla Mamelak, a spokeswoman for Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. The move will affect approximately 3,600 immigrants.
One of the shelters in Long Island City, Queens, is holding nearly 1,000 migrants and a curfew began last month in response to neighborhood complaints, the Associated Press reported.
“New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, including the asylum seekers we care for and the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage,” Mamelak said. “That includes prioritizing the health and safety of both New Yorkers who live there.” Statement to the Associated Press.
