At City Hall, hundreds of immigrants told the New York City Council they were disappointed in their benefits and wanted better food, long-term housing and accommodations for interpreters.
On Tuesday, undocumented immigrants were given the opportunity to address the city’s Immigration Commission. One woman, in her speech, expressed her dissatisfaction with the free meals and criticized the city authorities for not providing more permanent housing at the expense of taxpayers.
“The children can’t eat at the evacuation center,” the woman complained through an interpreter. “During Ramadan, I could not eat during breaks because the food was not tasty at all,” the woman claimed.
“They gave us two months to stay in the shelter, but then we have to take our luggage and children and go out and look for another place. It’s very difficult,” she said. added.
The same mother also expressed dissatisfaction with the city’s refusal to provide her 19-year-old son with free education.
The rally was held indoors, and more than 1,500 immigrants, mostly single men from military backgrounds, paraded outside City Hall Park.
Additionally, in late 2023, 5,000 cooked meals were thrown away uneaten by undocumented aliens at a mass evacuation center on one November day, costing the city at least $770,000 in food costs on that day alone. It was also revealed that waste was generated. Many people complained that they didn’t like the taste of the food or that it was too unhealthy.
