Mr. Rijour passed a background check and showed no obvious signs of mental health problems.
New York City Health CEO Dr. Mitch Katz said the suspect did not initially raise any red flags. However, Mr. Rijour has since been placed on leave.
“He completed a background check, and as you heard from the chief of police, he had no criminal record. So even with the fingerprinting, his record is clear. He passed the background check. “I did,” Katz said.
“He has only been working for us since mid-November. He has never worked independently at Woodhull. He was still 100% observed as part of his orientation. His work , to greet patients when they came in and direct them to the appropriate location.”
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said authorities launched a city-wide manhunt and were able to track down Lijour after receiving information about the man's whereabouts. A photo of the suspect was also released. CBS News.
“I'm happy to say this particular threat is over. Good old-fashioned law enforcement has kept violent criminals off our streets,” Caban said.
Authorities conducted nearly 1,000 interviews and interactions with witnesses before the suspect was finally arrested. Officials also reportedly credited the tip with helping end the search.
“While we stand here as city executives and police department leaders, the real accomplishment is the men and women knocking on doors, meeting and interacting with New Yorkers probably 1,000 times, reporting calls from New Yorkers. Credit to the hotline. We saw the photos that helped us,” said Mayor Eric Adams.
“We ended up doing basic detective work, following leads and knocking on doors. It was walking around neighborhoods talking to people, interviewing witnesses, collecting video. ''Cavan said.
“And through it all, stay focused on one thing: ending this threat.”
