New York City Mayor Eric Adams is working to have his parenting advice book removed from circulation because it contains inaccurate accounts of his own childhood.

Adams claims that the anecdote about him firing a gun at a group of friends at school never actually happened, even though it is included in his book, Don't Let It Happen.

“I pointed what I thought was a toy gun at a group of friends and pulled the trigger,” Adams wrote in the book. “The bullet was fired, and only by the grace of God and my poor aim, the bullet missed my friend. The event scared me so much that I dropped the gun and ran.”

At a press conference where he challenged his book, the New York City mayor said the novel was included in the final book due to lack of oversight.

“The co-authors of this book may have misunderstood,” Adams said Monday.

“There was an incident at school where someone pointed what appeared to be a toy gun,” he continued. “The book never went to print because it never went through the proofreading stage.”

“Don't Let It Happen” aims to guide parents to recognize when their children are engaging in dangerous behavior. In his preface, Adams declared, “Everything that happens in this book is true.''

The mayor's office said it was working to remove the book from circulation due to inaccurate text.

“The mayor has already contacted the publisher, and the publisher is working to remove this book from circulation,” spokesman Charles Rutbach told reporters in an email.
