Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s Response to House Resolution on Socialism
New York’s mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani, recently sidestepped a question concerning the House’s vote that condemned socialism, just before a crucial meeting with President Donald Trump.
Upon his arrival in Washington, D.C., Mamdani was asked about the resolution and he remarked, “Brother, all I can say is that all I have been thinking about is preparing for this rally and speaking up for New Yorkers.”
Earlier that day, the House of Representatives had passed a resolution denouncing socialism, with a vote tally of 285-98. Notably, 86 Democrats joined Republicans in support of this resolution, which included backing from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D.N.Y.), an ally of Mamdani. Surprisingly, two Democrats opted to vote present: Rep. Deborah Ross (D-Pennsylvania) and Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Oregon).
The resolution states that Congress condemns socialism in all its forms and opposes any implementation of socialist policies in the United States.
Trump has previously referred to Mamdani as a “communist lunatic,” while the mayor-elect pledged to lead New York City “against Trump.” However, both sides have recently moderated their public remarks in anticipation of their upcoming discussions.
Despite their differences, Trump expressed optimism about the meeting, telling Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade that he anticipated a “very amicable” conversation, emphasizing their shared goal of making New York stronger.
Mamdani acknowledged his disagreements with the president but insisted he would collaborate to pursue issues beneficial to New Yorkers. He also stressed, “If the agenda hurts New Yorkers, I’ll be the first to say something.”
