NYC Mayor Eric Adams faces a lawsuit for 'criminal conspiracy'

Former NYPD Official Sues Mayor Adams Over Allegations of Criminal Conspiracy

Former senior officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD) have filed a lawsuit against Mayor Eric Adams, accusing him of running a “criminal conspiracy” within the department designed to benefit former high-ranking officials. Adams, who is seeking reelection as an independent, dismissed the claims as “unfounded accusations from a disgruntled former employee,” according to his spokesperson.

The lawsuit was filed by former interim NYPD commissioner Tom Donlon in Manhattan’s Supreme Court. In it, he alleges that a “coordinated criminal conspiracy” permeates the upper echelons of city government, involving wire fraud, mail fraud, honest service fraud, obstructing justice, and retaliating against whistleblowers.

Donlon’s claims against city officials describe the situation as an assault on the integrity of the system. He expressed his belief that the lawsuit represents a fight against a corrupt system that neglects the public, silences truth, and punishes integrity.

In his own words, Donlon stated, “This company – the NYPD – was a criminal at its heart.”

In response, Adams’ spokesperson, Kayla Mamerak Altas, argued that these accusations come from disgruntled former employees who had opportunities to lead effectively within the police department. She asserted that the lawsuit is simply a means to seek compensation at the taxpayers’ expense after Donlon was removed from his role as interim police chief. Adams’ office maintains that they will address the claims in court, confident that they will be disproven.

Amidst this controversy, Adams is in a competitive reelection campaign against several opponents, including Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani and independent candidates like Andrew Cuomo and Cortis Sliwa. The mayor emphasized that the NYPD is directed by top experts and highlighted the drop in crime rates across the city, citing it as evidence of the department’s effectiveness.
