Outgoing NYC Mayor Criticizes Justice Department’s Actions

Eric Adams, the departing mayor of New York City, has accused the Biden administration’s Justice Department of taking “legal action” against political figures, including himself and former President Donald Trump, due to corruption claims and issues around handling classified documents.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “The Story,” Adams expressed concerns about the treatment of Americans advocating for educational reforms. He pointed out that these individuals were often targeted and placed on watch lists, which adds to his sense of dismay regarding how dissent is managed. He noted incidents like the raid on Trump’s residence and the treatment of public figures like Charlie Kirk, suggesting a pattern of the Justice Department targeting those who express differing viewpoints.

When questioned about his emotional response to these alleged injustices before experiencing personal scrutiny, Adams stated, “My personal experience allows me to see abuse firsthand.” He has dedicated much of his life to fighting systemic injustice, having served as a police officer, state senator, and borough president. He emphasized a long-standing commitment to advocating against the misuses within the criminal justice system, adding, “Certainly, that anger existed long before I was targeted.” His reflections resonate with the troubling experiences faced by Trump’s family as well.

Adams mentioned that his advocacy stems from a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by young men who have suffered from law enforcement’s overreach. He elaborated, “Having been through legal battles myself, it’s really been a personal expression of what I’ve been fighting for for years.” In September 2024, he was indicted on federal corruption charges tied to bribery, wire fraud, and illicit foreign campaign funding, which he has publicly denied.

The mayor alleges that the motivations behind the charges were politically charged, spurred by his criticisms of the Biden administration’s policies on illegal immigration. However, prosecutors claimed in court that the investigation commenced in September 2021, which predates his public criticisms and his election as mayor.

The case faced dismissal earlier this year at the behest of the Trump administration. As Adams approaches the end of his term, he is slated to step down at the start of the new year, handing over responsibilities to the incoming mayor, Zoran Mamdani.
