NYC Mayor Mamdani draws inspiration from Elon Musk with new efficiency commission

New York City’s Mayor Launches Efficiency Commission

Months into his term, Zoran Mamdani, the socialist mayor of New York City, is following a trend inspired by Elon Musk by establishing the Commission on City Government Efficiency (COGE).

Interestingly, the committee is expected to be led by progressives and Democrats, with a chairman closely associated with George Soros.

On Thursday, Mamdani stated that the panel’s goal is to identify methods to make city operations “smarter, faster, and more effective.” He emphasized that New Yorkers deserve the same level of care in city financial management as they afford themselves.

According to city announcements, COGE will be chaired by Patrick Gaspard, a veteran Democratic operative and former executive director of the Democratic National Committee, who also led the Soros family’s Open Society Foundations.

Mamdani has tasked the commission with analyzing “the entire New York City Charter,” aiming to enhance public service quality, streamline government efficiency, and ensure responsiveness to New Yorkers’ needs.

The commission is projected to dismantle “outdated bureaucratic barriers” that hinder infrastructure initiatives and delay public services. Gaspard believes it will also empower city officials with necessary tools and flexibility while modernizing budgeting practices to improve efficiency and save resources.

In what seems to be a comprehensive approach, the commission plans to conduct ten public hearings across the five boroughs, with proposals presented for voter consideration in November.

Mamdani noted that bureaucracy has long obstructed the delivery of essential services like housing, transportation, and childcare. He asserted that rebuilding public trust hinges on the government demonstrating its capacity to execute its policies effectively.

This initiative follows a meeting between Mamdani and Alex Soros, the current chairman of the Open Society Foundations and son of George Soros, at his residence in Manhattan.

Gaspard expressed eagerness about the collaboration, stating that New Yorkers require a government that actively fosters infrastructure growth, small businesses, and accessible services. He indicated his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the committee and to engage with New Yorkers to craft a modern charter for governance.

Previously, Gaspard referred to his leadership at the Open Society as a “deep honor,” emphasizing that genuine social change is typically achieved through collaboration between various sectors rather than through revolutions.

The committee will also include Susan Kang, associated with the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialist Party of America, and author of a book on labor rights. Additionally, Theodore Moore from a progressive advocacy group will help shape the organization’s strategic focus.

Meanwhile, some community leaders affiliated with the Democratic Party have joined the effort, although notable absences include Republican representatives, which has raised some eyebrows.

Joe Borelli, a former Republican New York City Council member and advocate for reform, remarked on the launch of COGE, questioning his own exclusion from the commission. He criticized the mayor’s administration for needing a consistent revenue stream to manage expenses linked to socialist governance, suggesting that large government initiatives might stifle economic growth.

Fox News Digital has sought comments from Mamdani’s office and the involved parties.
