A fight broke out at a Randalls Island shelter on Friday night following an earlier stabbing, sparking bad blood between rival migrant groups, police and officials said.
Sources said six migrants from Africa and South America were involved in the brawl at about 8 p.m. in a huge Manhattan tent city where rowdy behavior is common.
The brawl erupted after a 25-year-old African immigrant was stabbed in the left shoulder by an assailant from a rival group, New York Police and officials said.
Police said the man was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
Police said a “large, disorderly group” of people fought after the attack, necessitating the deployment of extra officers to the temporary shelter.
According to the NYPD, brothers Jose Deron, 19, and Moises Deron, 27, were arrested and charged with assault in connection with the stabbing.
An 18-year-old man was also detained for his involvement in the brawl. He was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and released.
Sources said Friday’s scuffle was the result of continued tension between the two groups.
Late-night chaos is nothing new at the Randalls Island shelter, which was set up last August to help ease the city’s overwhelming migrant crisis.
Five men were charged with assault in April over a disturbance that left an asylum seeker with a stab wound and four security guards injured when they intervened.
In the same month, an immigrant man viciously attacked and bit a security guard who was trying to break up a fight between him and his wife.
In January, a migrant attacked and stabbed to death a fellow asylum seeker at the same location while he was talking to his girlfriend.
