NYT editorial board member says it’s ‘silly’ for journalists to hold Harris and Trump equally accountable

New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay said it was “a little ridiculous” for journalists to hold Vice President Kamala Harris to the same standards as former President Trump.

Gay was a guest on “Morning Joe” on Thursday, where the MSNBC host lamented the “sacred” wall between editorial and news about presidential candidates, adding how absurd it is to believe there's a “moral equivalence” in criticizing Trump and Harris.

Gay agreed that “the choice is clear” between the two, but suggested a different standard should be applied to Trump.

“I think the challenge, not just for journalists but for this country, is that Donald Trump is not only a threat, he's lowering the bar. So I don't think that's unacceptable. And I think it's important for us as journalists to really get behind all the candidates that are running for office,” Gay said.

“I have a lot more to say about the policy speech from the vice president,” she continued. “I would be happy if she would answer more questions from the press. That's important.”

“It's a difficult situation because of the extremism of the Republican Party, the extremism of Donald Trump. It's difficult to hold both candidates equally accountable because one is committed to democracy and functions as a normal candidate in a normal American party, and the other is not.”

“So this is about extremism among Republican candidates, and it's important to hold all candidates accountable, but it sounds a little ridiculous sometimes, because when you think about the breadth of what the vice president offers to the American people, it doesn't compare to Donald Trump,” Gay concluded.

The New York Times editorial board announced last month that while it would continue to endorse presidential candidates, it would no longer endorse state and local elections.

“As the organizational voice of The Times, the Editorial Board fulfills our mission of helping readers around the world understand the world by providing a consistent, independent view of the world grounded in our long-standing, institutional values,” Kathleen Kingsbury, The Times's editorial editor, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital at the time.

“While elections everywhere remain important to the lives and experiences of our readers, our editorial board will be suspending the endorsement process for the New York election. We remain a news organization rooted in New York City historically, presently and in the future. Our newsroom will continue to actively cover New York races and Opinion will continue to provide perspective on races, candidates and issues at stake.”
