Obama supports Ilhan Omar while conservatives point to IRS targeting of the Tea Party.

On Sunday, former President Barack Obama ignited a significant online debate after expressing support for Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who is currently under multiple federal investigations related to her immigration status and finances.

In his post, Obama emphasized that “it is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say.” He asserted that the Trump Administration is precisely doing this to Congresswoman Omar.

Obama’s lengthy statement described the probes into Omar as “appalling.” He implied that her status as a vocal critic of the Trump administration is at the heart of these investigations. “Think about that,” he remarked. “The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president.”

Following this, Obama noted that such tactics should disturb all Americans, irrespective of their views on Omar. The post gained over 5 million views but quickly drew criticism from conservative circles. Critics highlighted instances from Obama’s administration, such as the IRS’s scrutiny of Tea Party groups and the investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign, as examples of political targeting.

Conservative commentator Dan Bongino described Obama’s comments as “unreal,” likening the former president’s lecture on democracy to being advised about self-control by a child. Another critic, Benjamin Weingarten from The Federalist, reflected on the irony of Obama discussing government overreach while referencing the investigations that took place during his presidency.

Other conservative voices echoed similar sentiments, reiterating past investigations allegedly initiated by Obama’s administration against perceived adversaries. In response to Obama’s remarks, White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis clarified that unlike President Biden, Trump did not use the Department of Justice to go after political opponents. “The Department is focused on restoring law and order and keeping Americans safe,” she stated.

Recently, it was reported that investigators are looking into whether Omar or her father committed fraud when she became a U.S. citizen years ago. There was also mention of a raid on Omar’s Washington home carried out by federal agents last week. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced an investigation into Omar’s financial disclosures, which had seen public scrutiny but not a formal investigation before.

Omar has been active on social media in the aftermath of these events, asserting that the raid by Trump’s Department of Homeland Security represents an “outrageous abuse of power.” She criticized the situation, saying it escalates the misuse of federal law enforcement against political rivals. Her office stated, “The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies.”
