Obama urges assistance for Gaza due to starvation worries, even with the hostage crisis ongoing

Obama’s Statement on Gaza Hunger Crisis

Former President Barack Obama made a rare public statement on Sunday addressing the hunger crisis in Gaza. He emphasized that aid should be delivered to the Palestinian people, regardless of the current hostage negotiations involving Israel.

This statement coincides with a New York Times report highlighting severe starvation among Gazans. Israel had earlier blocked aid to the region but has recently begun to allow some aid deliveries. Israeli leaders argue that reports of widespread starvation are exaggerated and part of a campaign by Hamas. However, Fox News’ Trey Yingst reported ongoing hunger issues prevalent in the region.

Obama stated, “While ongoing resolutions regarding the Gaza situation must include the return of all hostages and a halt to Israeli military operations, we must act immediately to prevent the tragedy of innocent lives being lost to preventable hunger.” He noted that “Assistance must be granted to reach the people of Gaza. There is no justification for withholding food and water from civilian families.”

Trump Comments on Gaza Aid

In related discussions, former President Donald Trump highlighted his efforts toward aiding Gaza during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He remarked that European countries are not providing sufficient assistance to Gaza and accused Hamas of misappropriating much of the aid sent to the region.

Speaking to reporters, Trump expressed concern about the situation, particularly for children, stating, “When I see people stealing food, it’s chaotic. The situation in Gaza is just chaos.” He reflected on the historical attempts for peace in the area, adding that they “didn’t work very well.”

Israeli Response to Humanitarian Assistance

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently reported conducting 28 humanitarian aid drops over a few hours, in addition to sending around 250 aid trucks throughout the week. An IDF spokesperson said, “Let me be clear: Israel supports civilian aid, not Hamas. The IDF will continue to support the flow of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed back against allegations regarding humanitarian aid, arguing that the United Nations is disseminating false claims about the situation. He stated, “I’ve done this so far. But the UN is spreading lies about Israel. They say we don’t allow humanitarian supplies, but we do. There are safe corridors.” He insisted that assistance protocols have always existed but are now formalized.
