New Zealand Man Arrested in Cryptocurrency Scam
A man from New Zealand has been detained for allegedly being part of a global criminal network that stole cryptocurrency assets estimated between seven to $265 million.
According to a recent press release, authorities revealed that the unnamed individual based in Wellington was involved in a scheme that illegally acquired crypto assets by manipulating victims from March to August 2024.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has leveled accusations of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering against several individuals.
In total, twelve people are facing charges related to this case, including some from Oakland and California.
Prosecutors claim that the accused funneled the profits from their operations through different cryptocurrency exchanges before spending it on luxury items such as handbags, cars, high-end clothing, watches, private security, rental properties, and extravagant entertainment.
Additional members of the group have also been apprehended and charged by the DOJ. Reports indicate that as of October 2023, this organization comprised hackers, callers, coordinators, money launderers, and robbers operating from home.
Last year, two of the group’s members, Malone Lamb and Giandiel Serrano, were arrested for allegedly stealing $230 million in code and attempting to employ advanced methods to launder the funds.
