On Friday, a group of Democrats and protesters made headlines when they broke into Delaney Hall Detention Center, a secure immigration facility located in Newark, New Jersey. This action was defended by Homeland Security Advisor Tricia McLaughlin, who described the detainees as “murderers, terrorists, child rapists, and MS-13 gang members.”
Protesters, including some congressional members, followed a bus bringing detainees into the facility before pushing through the gates and entering the grounds, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A noteworthy incident involved the Mayor of Newark, who was reportedly arrested for assault while making a “surveillance visit” to the facility, which is associated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a post on X, Representative Lamonica Mciver from New Jersey claimed that ICE officials had mistreated her and her colleague Bonnie Watson Coleman during the protest. However, surveillance footage released by the DHS shows Mciver appearing to push against the gate during the altercation.
The DHS remarked on social media, emphasizing that the “New Jersey Legislature meets the people fighting.” The incident has drawn criticism, with the White House stating that breaching the ICE facility “crossed a line.”
