In the aftermath of Tuesday's US general election, votes are still being counted. But one race that is indisputable is the presidential election. Former President Donald J. Trump returned to office on Tuesday, standing to become the second nonconsecutive president in U.S. history, joining Grover Cleveland.
But the language of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits presidents from serving more than two terms, consecutive or non-consecutive, so Trump will be a lame duck when he takes the oath of office in January. He will be inaugurated as president. That means talks have already begun about who will run in 2028.
