Oil Prices Surge Amid Iran Conflict

Oil prices briefly spiked to $126.41 a barrel early Thursday, reflecting ongoing market turbulence linked to the situation in Iran.

Brent crude, serving as the global oil benchmark, hit a record high after 2022 before settling back around $110 per barrel. This marks a significant jump from the pre-operation baseline of $73 per barrel. It’s worth noting that American families might feel the financial impact of the Iran conflict for years to come.

Gas prices in the U.S. typically move in line with Brent crude oil costs. For every $10 rise in Brent prices, motorists can expect a 24-cent increase in gasoline prices per gallon. Currently, gas prices range from about $2.80 to $4.30 per gallon, following the Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. military actions.

Brent crude has seen even higher prices before, reaching $139.18 per barrel in March 2022, right after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The spike on Thursday is the highest since that time, indicating the current spot price for oil—the immediate buying cost rather than a future contract.

Vice President J.D. Vance led negotiations with Iranian leaders in Pakistan starting on April 11, but, unfortunately, no deal was made.

“I think this is far more bad news for Iran than it is for the United States,” Vance remarked during the negotiations.

Following the unsuccessful talks, President Donald Trump ordered the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on April 12, effectively stopping all unauthorized maritime traffic in that region.

President Trump stated, “I have also directed our Navy to search for and interdict all vessels that have paid tolls to Iran on the high seas. Those who have paid illegal tolls will not be allowed safe passage on the high seas.” He added that Iranians who attack U.S. ships or peaceful vessels would face serious consequences, expressing that Iran knows well how to resolve its own crises, which have already caused considerable hardship for its people.
