Olympic Boxer Who Failed IBA Gender Test Declares ‘I Am a Woman’ After Big Olympic Win

After beating Hungary’s Anna-Luka Hammoni earlier this week, controversial Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Kherif defied her detractors, declaring: “I am a woman!”

Both Kheriff and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting failed the International Boxing Association’s gender eligibility test and missed out on medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but this year they have dominated female opponents.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev explained the organisation’s decision to strip Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting and Algeria’s Imane Kherif of eligibility to compete in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2023. “Based on DNA tests, it became clear that several athletes had tried to deceive their colleagues by posing as women. The tests proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes have been excluded from competition,” Kremlev said. Said.

After beating Italian fighter Angela Carini in just 46 seconds, Kheriff faced Hungary’s Anna-Luka Haroni on Saturday and was in tears after winning by decision.

There is currently no third-place match for women’s boxing at the Paris 2024 Games, so Kherif is guaranteed to win at least a bronze medal this year.

Kheriff previously defeated Italian boxer Angele Carini, who withdrew from the bout after 46 seconds due to fears for his safety.

Lin, of Taiwan, the second controversial boxer to fail a gender test, easily defeated Shitra Turdibekova of Uzbekistan on Friday.

Kheriff will face Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapen in the semi-finals on Tuesday afternoon.
