Olympic skater Ilia Malinin delays media session following his performance

Skater Ilya Marinin’s Unexpected Olympic Performance

U.S. figure skater Ilya Marinin didn’t have a media session scheduled for Saturday, as it has been postponed, according to Christine Brennan. This change came after Marinin placed eighth in the men’s free skate, an event many expected him to dominate. However, he fell twice during his routine, leaving fans and analysts stunned.

Marinin’s struggles were noted as one of the more surprising moments at the Winter Olympics, especially since he had been a strong contender leading up to the event.

Before his performance, Marinin mentioned feeling overwhelmed with “thoughts and memories.” He reflected on his experiences—both good and bad—after the competition, highlighting the unique pressure of competing at the Olympics. “It’s really different, and I don’t think a lot of people get that,” he said, explaining how quickly events unfolded, leaving little time for processing.

His routine began with a quadruple flip, but then he opted for a single axel and later fell during another jump. Marinin’s score of 156.33 points was significantly below his usual standards and far from the world record he set in December, which was 238.24 points.

The gold medal went to Mikhail Shaidlov of Kazakhstan, who achieved a personal best with a total of 291.58 points. Yuma Kagiyama from Japan took silver, while his teammate Shun Sato secured bronze. Marinin’s final score was 264.49 points, with his personal best being 333.81 points.

Post-event, Marinin congratulated the Kazakh competitors but expressed his own disappointment, particularly noting that he felt he could have performed better had he competed four years ago.

This outcome prompted frustrations and disappointment among Team USA and ice skating fans on social media.
