Progressive Reps Criticize Trump’s Decision on Iran
Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, both part of the progressive “Squad,” expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to take military action against Iran.
Omar remarked, “Trump has initiated an illegal war aimed at regime change.” She emphasized her personal experience, stating, “As someone who has survived the horrors of war, military strikes do not enhance our safety. They merely heighten tensions and lead to more chaos in the region.” Having fled Somalia as a child, she added, “When we abandon diplomacy, we opt for destruction.”
Tlaib took to social media in response to a video where Trump acknowledged potential U.S. troop casualties due to the attack. She stated, “He shows no concern for our military families,” which was shared by Omar. “He ignores that most Americans oppose this war.”
Tlaib further criticized Trump, asserting, “He doesn’t care about the Iranian people. He’s corrupt. Don’t be misled by his lies.”
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York also condemned Trump’s decision, suggesting he had abandoned diplomacy for a “catastrophic” military approach. She stated, “The American public is again being drawn into an unwanted war by a president indifferent to the repercussions of his actions. This conflict is illegal and unnecessary, and it will be devastating.” Ocasio-Cortez recalled that U.S. and Iranian negotiators had been making progress, which the president discarded in favor of war. She pleaded with him, “Stop deceiving the American people,” highlighting that the outcome was entirely avoidable.
Progressive Rep. Greg Cassar referred to Trump’s decision as an “illegal war,” adding, “Once more, the president is endangering other people’s children in a meaningless pursuit of regime change.”
The military operation, known as “Operation Epic Fury,” started shortly after 9 a.m. local time, according to the Pentagon. In a video posted on Truth Social, Trump urged the Iranian people to “take control of their destiny,” suggesting that freedom was imminent and advising them to stay indoors due to the danger outside.
Despite his emphasis on empowering Iranians, Trump mentioned that the operation aimed to protect Americans by mitigating the “immediate threat” posed by Iran, labeling its regime as “violent” and “frightening.” He characterized the mission as “noble,” aimed at curbing radical regimes that jeopardize U.S. security and destabilize the Middle East, even acknowledging the possibility of American casualties.
