Press Conference on Federal Law Enforcement Concerns
Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota recently held a press conference alongside fellow Squad member Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts, expressing ongoing calls for accountability against federal law enforcement. This comes after two individuals were shot and killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.
The press event took place just a day after Omar was reportedly sprayed with an unknown substance during a City Hall gathering, which garnered significant media attention.
Omar’s demands included the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and the dismantling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She urged fellow Democrats to “vote no” on any prosecution of the federal immigration agents involved in the shooting, as well as against funding legislation related to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.
Speaking outside the Carmel Mall in Minneapolis—a hub for Somali-owned businesses—Omar stated, “Voting against the funding bill is the least we can do. Supporting a resolution to impeach Kristi Noem is the least we can do. Holding ICE officers who break the law accountable is the least we can do.” She added, “We must abolish ICE, and we need it now.”
Omar’s stance reflects a wider coalition of Democrats who are united in opposition to the funding bill following the recent shootings of Renee Good and Alex Preti by federal officers.
As the deadline for reaching a funding agreement approaches—set for midnight Saturday—Congress is expected to have time to resolve differences due to the timing falling on a weekend, which might prevent an immediate spending lapse.
The White House had reached out to Senate Democrats to discuss various government funding alternatives, but Senate Democratic leadership instead issued a list of demands, asking for limitations on ICE activities as a precondition to avoid a government shutdown.
During the press conference, lawmakers described the federal government’s deportation efforts as a “federal occupation” and labeled it “state-sanctioned violence and political retaliation.” Omar emphasized, “What is happening in our state is not a coincidence. It is part of a systematic effort to target Black and brown immigrant and Muslim communities through fear, racial profiling, and intimidation.”
Pressley praised Omar’s “steadfast leadership” and echoed her sentiments, calling attention to the administration’s approach.
“There is someone in the Oval Office who is hell-bent on peddling hate and inflicting hurt and harm,” Pressley remarked, addressing the crowd. “He has ruled with malice, using ICE agents to terrorize our cities.” She criticized the agents for violating the rights of individuals in the name of law enforcement, which has resulted in violence without due process.
