Ilhan Omar Advocates for Assault Weapon Ban After Minneapolis School Shooting
Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, appeared on CNN’s “The State of the Union” recently, expressing the need to “remove weapons of assault” following a tragic shooting incident at a Catholic school in Minneapolis.
“It’s really important for us to consider a variety of solutions,” Omar shared with anchor Brianna Keilar. “The foremost step is to ensure that our community takes action to eliminate these offensive weapons.”
She also emphasized the necessity for Congress to improve mental health resources, suggesting that this should form part of a larger national response to the tragedy.
Minnesota Governor Calls for Serious Action After Shooting
Officials have confirmed that Robin Westman is the accused shooter, believed to have harmed two schoolchildren during a Catholic Mass and injured 17 others. Westman reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
When Keilar pressed Omar about the feasibility of Congress passing an assault weapons ban, she noted past challenges, pointing out that such measures have struggled to gain traction, even during President Obama’s administration when Democrats held the Senate.
Omar expressed personal concerns, revealing that her youngest child has developed fears about potential shooters entering schools and harming her or her peers.
Omar Criticizes Comments on Shooters’ Identity
In response to comments made by a White House advisor, Omar criticized Sebastian Gorka’s focus on the shooter’s transgender identity. She described this perspective as a diversion from more pressing issues. “It’s really disheartening to see people like him discussing this,” she remarked.
Omar added, “In a moment where we lose innocent lives, some choose to highlight irrelevant aspects instead of addressing the real problems.”
She also accused the Department of Homeland Security of failing to provide adequate resources for community safety, suggesting the government is shifting responsibility away from itself.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for additional comments.
