A subway bus was hijacked at gunpoint in Los Angeles, California, a city with strict gun laws, around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving one person dead.
Korea TLA Reported The Los Angeles Police Department received a call about the incident and learned that “an individual on the bus pulled a gun and the bus driver pressed a panic button on the outside of the bus that read 'Call 911.'”
Officers found the bus “near West 117th Street and South Figueroa Avenue,” but as they approached it began to move away from them. LAPD Deputy Chief Donald Graham said the bus driver had a gun to his head and was following officers' orders to run away from them.
“He was clearly intimidated and under threat of violence and it is the bus operator's responsibility to ensure he remained calm,” Mr Graham said.
Los Angeles Time attention Police pursued the bus for “more than an hour” and deployed spike strips to puncture the vehicle's tires, after which a SWAT team boarded the bus and took control of the situation.
A suspected hijacker was arrested and a passenger on the bus was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died in hospital.
Neither the bus driver nor any other passengers on the bus were injured.
California has the strictest gun laws of any state in the United States, including a ban on “assault weapons,” a ban on “large capacity” magazines, universal background checks, mandatory gun registration, red flag laws, gun storage laws, a 10-day waiting period for gun purchases, limits on the number of guns law-abiding citizens can purchase each month, a ban on carrying guns on campuses for self-defense, a ban on arming K-12 teachers for classroom defense, and numerous ammunition restrictions.
Breitbart News reported that Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) signed 24 new gun control bills into law earlier this week.
