Mass Shooting in New Orleans
A mass shooting in New Orleans injured three tourists and resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man who sought refuge in a well-known Creole restaurant, according to officials on Monday.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick reported that the incident took place shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. The 19-year-old victim was pursued down the street and shot.
In a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire, the man entered Dookie Chase Restaurant. Kirkpatrick mentioned that the restaurant was crowded at the time, and three customers waiting for a table were also targeted.
All three victims were women visiting the city—two from Los Angeles and one from Florida.
The Los Angeles woman sustained around five gunshot wounds and has undergone multiple surgeries. Her friend, who was also shot, is reported to be in stable condition. The Florida tourist who was injured received treatment at a hospital and has since been released.
Authorities believe there was one shooter involved but suspect that others may have participated. While the police are actively looking for the suspect, it’s noted that the individual who was shot appeared to be specifically targeted, hinting at a possible retaliatory motive. However, the exact reason is still unclear.
The deceased youth has been identified as Kareem Harris. His case has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about crime in New Orleans.
Dookie Chase Restaurant released a statement expressing gratitude for the community support and prayers during this challenging moment. The restaurant, famed for its Creole dishes, is also a historic gathering spot for civil rights figures and has hosted several political leaders.
