Police Chase Ends Tragically in Northwest D.C.
A police pursuit in Northwest D.C. culminated in a fatal incident involving a moped rider on the Taft Bridge.
Witnesses provided their accounts shortly after the event on Saturday evening. One witness, Ximen DeFillippes, was riding her bike near Woodley Road as the chase unfolded.
“I saw the police pass by, and then the car they were chasing came speeding towards me,” DeFillippes recalled. “It zoomed past on the sidewalk, driving really fast.”
Describing what she witnessed, DeFillippes said, “I’ve never seen anything so wild. It felt, well, almost like a scene from a movie.”
Another observer, Lamont Penry, reported the chase ended at the Chinese Embassy staff housing. He noted that the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a diplomatic car, prompting a chaotic scene.
“The driver jumped out and took off running. Some others stumbled out looking disoriented,” Penry explained. “They apprehended one who was on a bench, while others were at different spots around the vehicle.”
As the chase reached its climax on the bridge, 7News found the victim’s body covered with a white sheet. Witnesses indicated that a vehicle struck the moped rider during the pursuit.
“I saw someone get hit on the bridge, and it was alarming that no one halted the chase,” Penry remarked. “The police kept going until they turned back.”
Allegations surfaced that the suspects appeared to be quite young. While at the scene, 7News observed the arrest of one individual who was then placed in an ambulance.
DeFillippes, reflecting on her close call, mentioned, “I feel fortunate that two cars blocked my path just then. It stopped me from being right in the midst of it all. Honestly, I wasn’t surprised someone got hurt. Watching everything unfold, you could just sense it was going to go wrong.”
