Government Shutdown Blamed on Political Tactics
Democratic Representative Jared Golden from Maine expressed on Wednesday that the current government shutdown is being “promoted” by the “requests” stemming from “far-left groups.”
Golden was the sole Democrat to back the House Republican funding suspension plan on September 19. His remarks came after Senate Democrats blocked a GOP proposal intended to fund the government, leading to a shutdown beginning Wednesday. “This government closure is the result of hardball politics pushed by demands from party leaders on the far left to showcase opposition to President Trump,” Golden shared in a statement on X. He added that the closure negatively impacts Americans and the economy, ironically granting more power to the president.
He further elaborated, saying, “This struggle is allegedly about healthcare. I want to support extending ACA tax credits instead of the GOP’s proposed cuts to Medicaid. Yet, some in my party worry about tax credits benefiting high-income households. There’s definitely room for negotiations, but policy disputes shouldn’t lead to inflicting harm on the public due to this shutdown.”
Golden represents a district where Trump secured a nine-point margin in the 2024 presidential election.
Following his vote, Democrats mentioned in a statement that there is essential work in Congress which is hindered by the adverse effects of government shutdowns on ordinary people.
Republican Representative Lisa McClain from Michigan remarked, “Even Democrats acknowledge it; the closure is their responsibility. Rep. Jared Golden states it stems from political maneuvers by both the far left and right.”
Some analysts and Republican lawmakers had previously informed outlets that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer triggered the shutdown aiming to appease the left wing of the Democratic Party.
A left-wing organization, Indivisible, backed by substantial funding from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, has initiated a campaign urging support against GOP proposals to avert the shutdown.
On Tuesday evening, three Democrats sided with Republicans to prevent the shutdown: Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada and Angus King from Maine.
Cortez Masto noted, “This vote was for the country over party,” emphasizing her disapproval of a shutdown that would harm families in Nevada. King also indicated that shutting down the government inadvertently empowers Trump.
Moreover, a recent New York Times/Siena University survey revealed that 65% of respondents, including many Democrats, expressed that they prefer to avoid a government shutdown, even if their requests go unmet.
House Speaker Mike Johnson asserted that Democrats have “taken the US government hostage with extreme partisan demands.”
