OpenAI Partners with Building Trades Union for Data Center Expansion

On Wednesday, OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, announced a new partnership with the North American Building Trades Union (NABTU). This move is part of a broader strategy to ramp up data center construction across the United States.

OpenAI’s collaboration with NABTU is seen as a significant step for AI companies aiming to secure the skilled workforce necessary for ambitious infrastructure projects. The partnership intends to generate union jobs, enhance apprenticeship programs, and foster regional economic opportunities.

During BlackRock’s Infrastructure Summit, Altman shared the details of this collaboration alongside NABTU President Sean McGarvey. He highlighted the crucial role organized labor plays in OpenAI’s expansion efforts.

Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, expressed that the company is facing major workforce challenges as it plans to meet its ambitious infrastructure goals. He mentioned that achieving 10 gigawatts of computing power by 2030 would require 20% more skilled workers compared to today. Lehane underscored the need to develop this talent pool swiftly, particularly given global competition, notably from China.

As part of their agreement, OpenAI will invest $1.5 million over the next five years to support training and recruitment initiatives by NABTU. This investment is aimed at cultivating the skilled workforce needed for building and maintaining advanced data center infrastructure.

This isn’t the first time OpenAI has teamed up with a labor organization. Previously, the company collaborated with the American Federation of Teachers to establish the National AI Instruction Academy, indicating a trend of engagement with labor unions.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for AI companies, who are under pressure to quickly scale up their computing infrastructure to stay competitive in the global AI landscape. Data centers are essential for AI development, as they provide the necessary computing power to train and run complex AI models.
