Microsoft-backed OpenAI has signed a deal with Arizona State University as the owner of ChatGPT looks to expand its partnerships beyond technology and media companies.
The university announced Thursday that access to ChatGPT Enterprise will be available. ChatGPT Enterprise is a version of the viral chatbot that provides greater security, privacy, and faster access to OpenAI's technology.
This development contrasts with the initial alarm in academia when OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT raised concerns that the technology's sophisticated human-like responses could be exploited.
“ASU recognizes that augmented artificial intelligence systems are here to stay, and we are optimistic about their potential to become great tools to help students learn,” said ASU President Michael Crow.
OpenAI's foray into education comes after the company partnered with the American Journalism Project and news publisher The Associated Press last year.
“We are eager to learn from ASU and expand the impact of ChatGPT in higher education,” said OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap.

Starting in February, ASU will hold an open challenge for faculty and staff to submit ideas for the best usage scenarios.
OpenAI will not use data from ASU for training models, ensuring prompts are kept private and secure, the university said.
