Vice President Kamala Harris has been criticized by critics on the left after spending $1 billion on her campaign and losing in a landslide to President-elect Donald Trump. The campaign reportedly ended up with nearly $20 million in debt.
The spending included $1 million donated to Oprah Winfrey's company, Harpo Productions.
“Normally, I'm generally reluctant to respond to rumors, but lately I've realized that if I don't stop lying, the lies will only get bigger,” she wrote. “I wasn't paid a dime. My time and energy went to supporting the campaign.”
She also said that she did not take a “personal fee” for her appearance, but that her company was asked to provide set lighting, cameras, microphones, chairs and other equipment for the set.
“But the people who worked on it needed to be compensated, and they were,” she said. “End of story.”
Her accounting was confirmed by a Harpo Productions spokesperson to Variety.
“This campaign paid for the production of the livestreamed event 'Unite for America,' held on September 19th in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan.” said Public Relations Officer. “Oprah Winfrey was never personally compensated during her campaign, nor did she receive any compensation from Harpo.”
The campaign also paid $500,000 to a nonprofit founded by activist Al Sharpton shortly before Harris appeared in a video with Sharpton praising her and attacking Trump. . Sharpton reportedly received $650,000 in compensation from the organization in 2021.
