An Oregon father is accused of giving his daughter’s 12-year-old friend a benzo-laced smoothie during a sleepover.
Michael Maiden, 57, of Lake Oswego, turned himself in to the Clackamas County Jail on February 28th. Lake Oswego Police DepartmentMaiden was charged with three counts of causing another person to ingest a controlled substance, three counts of subjecting another person to a Schedule 4 controlled substance, and three counts of distributing a controlled substance to a minor.
On Saturday, August 26, 2023, the Lake Oswego Police Department was notified that three 12-year-old girls were being treated at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland. The three girls tested positive for benzodiazepines.
The three girls were friends of Maiden’s daughter and had attended a sleepover at Maiden’s home the night before.
Between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., Mayden made the girls drink mango smoothies containing benzodiazepines, according to a probable cause affidavit written by Lake Oswego Police Department Detective Nicole Palmeri.
Maiden “insisted they were drinking it,” the affidavit said, and the girls told police the smoothie had “small white lumps all over it and sprinkled on top.” That’s what it means.
One of the girls reportedly didn’t like the smoothie, but Maiden reportedly made a second one for her to try.

These drugs are commonly known as benzos and downers.
The girls told police they immediately felt “lightheaded” and “awkward” and even fell into a “deep, deep sleep” that they had never experienced before, and even blacked out, according to the affidavit. He is said to have given a statement.
Oregon’s father was “very involved” in the girls’ activities during the sleepover, including watching movies and having a “spa night,” according to the affidavit.

Police said Mayden returned to the basement and stood near the girls for an extended period of time.
The 12-year-old girl told Palmeri: “When I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep, I felt him looking at me because of his presence.”
Maiden “seemed like he was testing us to make sure we weren’t awake,” the girl told police.
After receiving the worrying text messages, the parents allegedly alerted the parents of the other girls who were at the sleepover and picked up their daughters around 3am on Sunday.
The parents claimed Maiden resisted at first and told them to pick up their daughters in the morning.
Around noon on Sunday, Palmeri interviewed one of the girls and said she “walked slowly, balanced with the help of her mother, had heavy eyelids, and spoke slowly.”
Mark Cogan, Ms Maiden’s lawyer, said: NBC News “Mr. Maiden is presumed innocent. We have not seen the evidence. The indictment was handed down by a closed-door grand jury with no access to the judge or defense, and we believe the people will be sentenced.” I would like you to reserve judgment until then.” The facts are known. ”
Maiden was arraigned Wednesday and pleaded not guilty.
He was released on $50,000 bail.
Maiden and his wife divorced late last year, according to court records.
