Oregon high school transgender track athlete competes against girls at event, sparking outrage on social media

An Oregon high school came under fire Saturday for allowing a transgender athlete to compete against girls in a tournament.

Aiden Gallagher, a 10th grader at McDaniel High School, competed in the Sherwood Need for Speed ​​Classic in Sherwood, Oregon. There was footage of Gallagher blowing away the competition in the 200m heat.

Gallagher scored 25.49 points, placing second in that event and the 400 meters, seventh in the 4×100 replay and eighth in the 4×400 relay.

However, Gallagher’s ability to compete in this event sparked outrage on social media.

“It is clear misogyny to let men win in women’s sports,” the Independent Council for Women in Sport (ICONS) wrote about X.

The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) has policies regarding transgender participation in high school sports.

“OSAA strives to provide a fair and safe environment for all students while allowing them to participate in athletic and activity programs consistent with their asserted gender identity,” the policy states.

Oregon has a transgender inclusion policy.

“Similar to regulation 8.2 on qualification periods/graduation periods, such regulations promote harmony and fair competition among member schools by maintaining equality of qualifications and ensure that students have the opportunity to participate in interschool activities.
