Middle Schoolers Celebrate Pride Month in Eugene, Oregon
Students in Eugene, Oregon, are reportedly being encouraged to participate in various themed activities for “Pride Month” this week.
The Academy of Arts and Technology, part of the Eugene School District 4J, invited kids to engage in classes celebrating the LGBT community during something they called “Pride Spirit Week.” As noted in a Fox News report, parents received information about these activities late Monday.
One of the event themes encouraged students to wear rainbow colors to show support, while another asked them to don black clothing in remembrance of deceased LGBT community members.
Wednesday’s theme involved students dressing as drag queens or kings, allowing them to explore different gender expressions. Fox also reported that Thursday was marked as “Queer Hero Day,” with the final activity focusing on the “Pride Flag.”
Some parents voiced concerns about the timing of the notification from school officials, unsure why they weren’t informed sooner. A spokesperson later mentioned that parents should have indeed been alerted ahead of time.
Though most activities this week weren’t formally integrated into the school curriculum, they are acknowledged within the Oregon Department of Education’s “LGBTQ2SIA+ Student Success Plan.”
In other related news, social media pages like Sesame Street have celebrated the start of “Pride Month” recently, as reported by Breitbart News.
While some companies and well-known brands have pulled back on their sponsorship of “Pride Month,” others, including Walmart, still appear to be selling LGBT-themed merchandise for children, according to a study by the American Future nonprofit.
In a broader context, Oregon school districts are reportedly at odds with President Donald Trump’s push against left-leaning gender ideology and diversity policies in public schools. A Fox report highlighted that just two days after Trump affirmed a binary understanding of gender, the Eugene 4J Board of Education adopted a resolution supporting transgender individuals and ensuring fair representation for them in schools.
